I got into Scentwork with my first rescue dog Bear since he was reactive there weren't many choices of dog sports for reactive dogs back then. Scentwork was a perfect way to channel his breed characteristics as a German Shepherd X Husky. We started our journey through the UK College of Scent Dogs with two week long courses to become accredited as a Scentwork Instructor & a Detection Dog Handler.
During the courses we had the advantage of searching 747 Jumbo Jets, Buses, Rooms and outdoor searches, he absolutely loved Scentwork and I loved watching him thoroughly enjoy himself. So it was safe to say me & Bear were hooked!
Now I want to ignite the same passion we have for scentwork in other dog owners!

Who Are Our Scentwork Classes For?
Whether you're looking for a fun new hobby, a confidence-building activity or a rewarding way to mentally stimulate your dog, our Scentwork Classes in Northumberland are designed for dogs of every breed, age and ability.
Unlike many dog sports, success in scentwork isn't determined by speed, strength or obedience—it's about allowing your dog to use the incredible ability they were born with: their nose.
Our classes are perfect for:
🐾 Reactive Dogs
If your dog finds traditional group classes overwhelming, scentwork could be the activity you've been searching for. Dogs work one at a time, so there's no pressure to interact with other dogs or people. Instead, they can focus on searching, building confidence and succeeding in a calm, supportive environment.
🐾 Nervous or Rescue Dogs
Scentwork helps shy and anxious dogs gain confidence through independent problem-solving. Every successful search builds resilience and encourages your dog to explore the world with greater confidence.
🐾 High-Energy & Working Breeds
Spaniels, Labradors, German Shepherds, Collies, Terriers, Retrievers and other working breeds were bred to use their noses. Scentwork provides a healthy outlet for those natural instincts, helping to reduce boredom and channel energy into a purposeful activity.
🐾 Puppies & Adolescent Dogs
Young dogs love learning through play. Scentwork develops focus, problem-solving skills and confidence while providing valuable mental enrichment during those energetic adolescent months.
🐾 Older Dogs
As dogs age, they may slow down physically, but their nose remains just as remarkable. Scentwork offers low-impact mental exercise that keeps senior dogs engaged, active and enjoying life.
🐾 Dogs Who Simply Love to Sniff
You don't need a behaviour problem or aspirations to compete. If your dog enjoys exploring the world through their nose, scentwork provides a fantastic way to strengthen your bond while giving them an activity they'll genuinely look forward to every fortnight.

Our reviews reflect our calm approach, clear support, and commitment to dog welfare.
Your dog's nose is their most powerful tool for understanding the world. Every walk, garden visit and new environment is filled with information that humans simply cannot experience—but scentwork gives your dog the opportunity to use this incredible natural ability in a focused and rewarding way.
Unlike activities that rely purely on physical exercise, dog scentwork training challenges your dog's brain. Searching requires concentration, problem-solving, independence and decision-making, creating a mentally enriching experience that helps dogs use the skills they were naturally born with.
Research into nosework has found that scent-based activities allow dogs to engage in natural behaviours and can contribute to positive welfare by giving them opportunities to make choices, solve problems and work independently.
🐾 Builds confidence
Successful searches help dogs learn that exploring and trying new things leads to positive outcomes.
🐾 Provides powerful mental enrichment
Scentwork gives your dog a meaningful challenge that exercises their brain, not just their body.
🐾 Encourages focus and problem-solving
Dogs learn to slow down, think and use their natural abilities to find solutions.
🐾 Strengthens your bond
You learn to understand your dog's communication while working together as a team.
🐾 Supports dogs who need a calmer activity
Because scentwork focuses on searching rather than direct interaction with other dogs, it can be a fantastic option for nervous or reactive dogs who find traditional activities overwhelming.
🐾 Channels natural instincts in a positive way
From Labradors and Spaniels to Terriers and mixed breeds, every dog has the ability to enjoy using their nose.
Scentwork isn't about having the fastest dog or the most obedient dog—it's about discovering what your dog can achieve when they are given the opportunity to use their incredible sense of smell.
At College 4 Canines, our Scentwork Classes in Northumberland help dogs of all ages and abilities develop confidence, focus and problem-solving skills through fun, force-free training that celebrates the amazing abilities of every dog.
