About College 4 Canines
College 4 Canines is led by Denise Devereux, an accredited Scentwork Trainer & Detection Dog Handler through UKCSD training dogs across Blyth and Northumberland.
I got into Scentwork with my first rescue dog Bear since he was reactive there weren't many choices of dog sports for reactive dogs back then. Scentwork was a perfect way to channel his breed characteristics as a German Shepherd X Husky. We started our journey through the UK College of Scent Dogs with two week long courses to become accredited as a Scentwork Instructor & a Detection Dog Handler.
During the courses we had the advantage of searching 747 Jumbo Jets, Buses, Rooms and outdoor searches, he absolutely loved Scentwork and I loved watching him thoroughly enjoy himself. So it was safe to say me & Bear were hooked!
Now I want to ignite the same passion we have for scentwork in other dog owners!

Whether you're looking for a fun new hobby, a confidence-building activity or a rewarding way to mentally stimulate your dog, our Scentwork Classes in Northumberland are designed for dogs of every breed, age and ability.
Unlike many dog sports, success in scentwork isn't determined by speed, strength or obedience—it's about allowing your dog to use the incredible ability they were born with: their nose.

If your dog finds traditional group classes overwhelming, scentwork could be the activity you've been searching for. Dogs work one at a time, so there's no pressure to interact with other dogs or people. Instead, they can focus on searching, building confidence and succeeding in a calm, supportive environment.
🐾 Nervous or Rescue Dogs
Scentwork helps shy and anxious dogs gain confidence through independent problem-solving. Every successful search builds resilience and encourages your dog to explore the world with greater confidence.
🐾 High-Energy & Working Breeds
Spaniels, Labradors, German Shepherds, Collies, Terriers, Retrievers and other working breeds were bred to use their noses. Scentwork provides a healthy outlet for those natural instincts, helping to reduce boredom and channel energy into a purposeful activity.
🐾 Puppies & Adolescent Dogs

Simple container searches using boxes and accessible objects.
Searches involving tables, chairs and everyday items.
Basic outdoor searches in a defined area.
One introductory blind search where the handler does not know the hide location.
One hide per search, using easily detectable scent sources.
Straightforward hide placements, progressing from accessible to partially concealed.
Focus on odour recognition, finding the hide and developing the dog's indication.
Assessment of independent searching, handler observation and safe, positive working.
Silver Trials
5 trials covering varied search environments and challenges.
Container and luggage searches involving multiple hides. Furniture, perimeter and complex object searches.
Outdoor searches with varied objects, heights and hide placements.
Wall or vehicle exterior searches
Blind multi-hide searches where the handler does not know the hide locations.
Two to three hides per search, with a mixture of small and medium scent sources.
More challenging concealment and increasingly complex scent movement.
Focus on independent searching, locating multiple hides and resuming the search after each find.
Gold Trials
6 trials testing precision, problem-solving and handler observation.
Complex searches with a mixture of hide sizes.
Advanced indoor & outdoor searches involving larger, more challenging areas.
Mixed-environment with multiple search zones.
Small & subtle hides in varied positions at different heights.
Complex scent puzzles where odour may travel away from the source.
